Dragon ships under the Nuance brand, owned by Microsoft since the 2022 acquisition. Nuance and Microsoft sell Dragon Professional v16 directly. Authorized resellers offer discounted volume licenses for organizations. Medical One and Legal Anywhere are enterprise-only, with no list price on the Nuance site.

What each Dragon tier covers

Professional v16 is the perpetual desktop license most people refer to as Dragon. It includes the full speech engine, custom vocabulary, command-by-voice macros, and works inside Microsoft Word, Outlook, and most Windows applications. Latest version is v16, optimized for Windows 11 and Office 2021, backwards compatible with Windows 10.

Legal Individual v16 adds legal vocabularies and document formatting tuned for case briefs, contracts, and depositions. The $100 premium over Professional ships ready-to-use legal terminology and skips the custom training step.

Professional Anywhere is the cloud-delivered version of Professional, billed monthly per user. Useful for IT departments that want centralized management instead of installing a perpetual license on each Windows machine.

Dragon Anywhere is the mobile-only product. The app runs on iOS 14 and later or Android, transcribes in the cloud, and is sold as a standalone subscription. It does not bundle with desktop Dragon, even though both share the Dragon brand.

Dragon Medical One targets healthcare. The contract includes a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement, EHR integration with platforms like Epic and Cerner per Nuance product pages, and medical vocabulary across major specialties. Pricing is enterprise-only, quoted per user per year. User reports and analyst notes put typical figures at $1,500 to $2,500.

The Mac problem

Dragon for Mac was discontinued in 2018. Nuance has not released a native Mac version since. The only ways to run Dragon Professional on a Mac today are Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion, both of which require a Windows VM and a Windows license, on top of the Dragon Professional v16 purchase.

The VM path also tends to cost performance. Dragon Professional v16 is CPU intensive, and user reports on the Nuance forum point to slower behavior under virtualization than on bare-metal Windows. Apple Silicon Macs running Windows 11 ARM in Parallels improve the experience but rarely match a native Mac dictation app.

Mac and mixed-platform organizations face three paths. Stack Dragon, Parallels or VMware, and a Windows license per Mac seat. Switch to a Mac-native alternative like Spokenly. Or split the team across two dictation tools, which usually means losing custom vocabulary at the boundary. The dictation for Mac page walks through the native Mac dictation setup in detail.

For healthcare workflows

Dragon Medical One is the dominant clinical dictation product in US hospitals. The enterprise contract bundles HIPAA Business Associate Agreement, Epic and Cerner integration, medical vocabulary across major specialties, and dedicated support. The trade-off is the price: typical contracts land $1,500 to $2,500 per user per year, before integration services.

Smaller clinics and solo practitioners sometimes look for HIPAA-eligible alternatives that fit a tighter budget. A common path is bring-your-own-key cloud transcription with a provider that signs HIPAA Business Associate Agreements directly. Deepgram, for example, signs BAAs with healthcare customers using their API. In Spokenly's BYOK mode, audio travels from the user's machine straight to the provider under that BAA, and the transcript returns the same way.

Important compliance note: Spokenly does not sign HIPAA Business Associate Agreements directly. The BAA in a BYOK setup is between the healthcare customer and the cloud provider (for example, Deepgram). Procurement teams at larger hospitals usually require a BAA with every vendor in the protected health information path, including the desktop app, which means Spokenly's BYOK approach does not meet that bar by itself. Spokenly also does not integrate with Epic, Cerner, or other EHR platforms today.

The medical dictation software page covers the healthcare workflow setup and provider options in more detail. Larger hospitals under single-vendor compliance mandates usually still require Dragon Medical One, since procurement demands a named, integrated provider with direct EHR support.

When to choose what

Dragon and Spokenly fit different organizations. The criteria below split the use cases clearly.

Choose Dragon if

  • Already standardized on Windows in the entire organization
  • Need enterprise medical or legal vocabulary built in
  • Compliance team requires a single named vendor with a signed BAA
  • Existing Epic, Cerner, or law firm document management integration
  • Want a perpetual license (Professional v16) rather than any subscription

Choose Spokenly if

  • Mac, iOS, or mixed-platform environment (Dragon for Mac was discontinued)
  • Want a native macOS app, not Dragon Professional running in Parallels
  • Budget-conscious for individual or small-team use
  • Comfortable with bring-your-own-key cloud providers like Deepgram or OpenAI
  • Want modern AI text processing through Claude, GPT-4, or Gemini
  • Need iOS keyboard dictation that works inside any iOS app

The Dragon alternative landing page covers migration paths for individuals leaving Dragon, and the Spokenly pricing page details what is included in Free, BYOK, and Pro.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Dragon Dictation cost in 2026?

Dragon Professional v16 is $699 as a one-time perpetual license for Windows. Dragon Legal Individual v16 is $799. Dragon Anywhere mobile is $15 per month or $150 per year. Dragon Professional Anywhere cloud is $15 per user per month. Dragon Medical One and Dragon Legal Anywhere are enterprise subscriptions with no public pricing, typically negotiated at $1,500 to $2,500 per user per year.

Is Dragon Dictation available for Mac?

No. Nuance discontinued Dragon for Mac in 2018 and has not released a native Mac version since. Mac users who need Dragon today run Dragon Professional v16 inside Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion, which adds a Windows VM cost and a noticeable performance penalty. Native Mac dictation alternatives like Spokenly are usually a better fit for Mac-only workflows.

How much does Dragon Medical cost?

Dragon Medical One does not publish prices. Industry quotes typically land in the $1,500 to $2,500 per user per year range, depending on contract size, integration scope, and support tier. The enterprise contract includes a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement, Epic or Cerner integration, and dedicated support. Smaller clinics often find this cost prohibitive and look for HIPAA-eligible alternatives that work through BYOK providers like Deepgram (which signs BAAs for healthcare customers).

What is the cheapest Dragon product?

Dragon Anywhere annual at $150 per year is the cheapest Dragon path, but it only runs on iOS and Android (mobile only). For desktop dictation, the cheapest Dragon option is Dragon Professional v16 at $699 perpetual. Resellers like CDW sometimes discount Professional below the list price for corporate accounts. For users who want zero recurring or upfront cost, Spokenly Free is a $0 path on Mac, iOS, and Windows.

Is there a free alternative to Dragon?

Spokenly is a free dictation app for macOS, iOS, and Windows. It runs Parakeet V3 and Whisper Large V3 Turbo locally on Apple Silicon, with no word caps. Cloud transcription is available through bring-your-own-key with OpenAI, Deepgram, or Groq, billed directly by the provider. The Spokenly Pro tier at $9.99 per month adds managed cloud models for users who do not want to manage API keys.

Does Dragon work on iPhone or iPad?

Yes. Dragon Anywhere is the iOS app, available on iPhone and iPad for $15 per month or $150 per year. Dragon Anywhere is cloud-only, requires internet, and is separate from the desktop Dragon Professional license. The two products do not share custom vocabulary directly. Spokenly offers iOS dictation as a system keyboard that works inside any iOS app, with no separate subscription.
