- 3
Press your shortcut and speak

- 4
Optional: connect MCP for agent-initiated voice
Open Cursor Settings → MCP → Add new MCP server, set type to 'http' and URL to http://localhost:51089/mcp. Restart Cursor. Cursor Agent can now request voice input mid-task.

Use voice for code descriptions
Describing logic, refactors, and edge cases by voice is faster than typing. Cursor handles the code, you handle the intent.
Why Spokenly for Cursor
Cursor-aware voice loops
Through MCP, Cursor Agent can call Spokenly when it needs input. Speak your answer, the agent continues.
Whisper-grade accuracy on code
Spokenly's transcription handles function names, library names, and shell commands well. Custom word replacements catch the rest.
Local audio, your code never leaks
Spokenly runs Whisper on your Mac. Audio doesn't go to a third-party transcription service. Only the typed text reaches Cursor.
Common use cases
Describing refactors to Cursor Agent
Long refactor instructions are easier to speak than type. Spokenly transcribes 200-word descriptions in 30 seconds.
Voice-first feature specs
Dictate the spec, Cursor implements. Voice is faster for back-and-forth iteration than typing.
Composer prompts
Cursor's Composer accepts long, multi-file prompts. Voice dictation is far less tedious than typing them.
Pair programming alone
Talk through your logic out loud. Spokenly captures it as a comment or commit message draft.
Inline edits with Cmd+K
Cursor's Cmd+K inline-edit accepts natural-language transforms. Voice describing 'extract this into a hook' is faster than typing it.
Multilingual coding sessions
Spokenly supports 100+ languages.speak Spanish, German, Japanese into Cursor's chat without changing keyboard layouts. Useful for international teams or non-English commit messages.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does MCP integration work in Cursor?
Cursor Agent supports HTTP MCP. Spokenly runs a local HTTP MCP server on localhost:51089. Add it to Cursor's MCP settings and the agent can call Spokenly's dictation tool when it needs your input.
Do I need MCP to use voice in Cursor?
No. Spokenly's dictation works in any text field including Cursor's chat and Composer. MCP is only needed if you want the agent to call Spokenly autonomously.
Will Whisper handle programming terms?
Mostly yes. Function names, library names, common acronyms work well. For terms it consistently mishears (your codebase-specific names), Spokenly's word replacements fix them automatically.
Is this free for Cursor users?
Yes. Spokenly's local Whisper is completely free. Pro is optional and BYOK is also free. See spokenly.app/pricing.students get 50% off at spokenly.app/students.
Does Cursor have its own built-in voice mode?
Cursor has no native voice dictation as of 2026. macOS users can use Apple Dictation in Cursor, but Spokenly is built for technical content like function names and shell commands.
What is the Spokenly MCP server URL?
Spokenly exposes its HTTP MCP server on http://localhost:51089/mcp. Add it to Cursor Settings → MCP. Restart Cursor after adding the server for it to register.
Does this work with project-level .cursor/mcp.json?
Yes. You can add Spokenly's MCP config to a project's .cursor/mcp.json so it activates only for that workspace, or globally via Cursor Settings for all projects.
Can I dictate Bugbot review comments by voice?
Yes. Cursor Bugbot's review comments use standard text input, so Spokenly's dictation works there. Useful for explaining context or proposing fixes inline without typing.
Does Spokenly work on Windows or Linux Cursor?
Not yet. Spokenly is macOS and iOS only. Cursor on Windows or Linux would need a different dictation tool. See spokenly.app/dictation-for-mac for the Mac feature list.
