Why Spokenly Is Not Open Source

Spokenly is focused on delivering the best voice-to-text experience on Apple platforms. Keeping the codebase proprietary allows us to iterate quickly, maintain quality across macOS and iOS, and fund ongoing development through optional Pro subscriptions.

We understand that open source is often associated with trust and transparency, especially for privacy-sensitive tools. Instead of opening the source code, we built Spokenly so that trust comes from its architecture: local models process audio entirely on your device, and Local Only Mode blocks all network access. Your voice data never touches our servers.

Privacy Without Source Code

How Spokenly ensures your voice data stays private.

Full offline mode

Local models run entirely on your Mac using Apple Silicon. No internet needed.

No telemetry on voice data

Your recordings and transcriptions are never collected, stored, or analyzed by Spokenly.

Local Only Mode

Block all network requests with a single toggle. Nothing leaves your device.

Bring your own API keys

Use your own OpenAI, Deepgram, or Groq keys. Traffic goes directly to the provider, not through Spokenly.

Free Without Being Open Source

Spokenly is completely free with local models and BYOK. No account needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Spokenly on GitHub?

No. Spokenly is not open source and does not have a public GitHub repository. It is a proprietary application, but it is free to use with local models and bring-your-own API keys.

Is Spokenly free?

Yes. Local speech-to-text with Whisper and Parakeet models is completely free. No account, no time limits, no word caps. You can also use your own API keys for cloud transcription at zero cost. Pro ($9.99/mo) adds managed cloud models.

Why is Spokenly not open source?

Keeping the codebase proprietary allows us to ship faster, maintain a consistent experience across macOS and iOS, and sustain development through optional Pro subscriptions. We prioritize privacy through architecture, not source code visibility.

Can I trust Spokenly with my voice data?

Yes. When using local models, all audio processing happens on your device using Apple Silicon. Audio never leaves your Mac. You can enable Local Only Mode to block all network requests. No telemetry, no analytics on your voice data.

Are there open-source alternatives to Spokenly?

Yes. Handy and VoiceInk are open-source dictation apps for macOS. Spokenly differentiates with both local and cloud models, AI text processing, MCP integration for coding agents, and a native iOS app.

Does Spokenly collect my data?

Spokenly does not collect or store your voice recordings or transcribed text. In Local Only Mode, no data leaves your device at all. Cloud transcription sends audio to the provider you choose (OpenAI, Deepgram, Groq) and nothing is stored on Spokenly servers.

Open-Source Dictation Alternatives

If open source is a requirement for you, there are solid alternatives. Handy is a free, MIT-licensed dictation app with 17k+ GitHub stars. VoiceInk is another open-source option for macOS.

Spokenly differentiates by offering both local and cloud transcription, AI text processing with custom prompts, an MCP server for AI coding agents, agent mode for macOS automation, and a native iOS app. If you want the broadest feature set in a free dictation app without needing to inspect the source, Spokenly is worth trying.
